Supplements We Think Keep Us Healthy

No matter how healthy you eat…and you should be eating REALLY healthy by now if you are following the Fit4God plan…you will probably not be able to get all the nutrients your body needs just from food. Here is a list of supplements we take and think work well, as well as some brand names that we like. Of course, we are not doctors, so you should talk to your doctor before enacting these and of these recommendations.

 

 

Supplements for Adults

  • Multivitamin – look for one with selenium, copper, zinc and iodine (Centrum is good)
  • Probiotic (Pearls, Culturelle, and Reuteri are good brands, there are others)
  • Vitamin D
    • 2000 – 4000 IU per day for adults
    • 1000 IU per 50 pounds of body weight for children
  • Omega-3 – 2 – 3 g per day – I like to get Nature’s Bounty Odorless (the odorless ones really help!), Krill oil is also good
  • Magnesium – 400 mg per day (Bluebonnet brand is good – be careful on brands with magnesium – a good brand will not give you gassiness or other tummy upset)
  • Vitamin C – 500 mg to 1 g per day, split into two doses

If your energy is low, you might want to look into taking a B Complex. I take Solgar brand B Complex 100 every day and can really tell if I skip it, as my energy will be much lower.

 

 

Supplements for Children

Children need supplements too…probably even more than adults, since they are more likely to be picky eaters. I am reluctant to make recommendations for kids, but I don’t mind sharing here what I give my own children. Again, consult your kids’ pediatrician before starting any supplements. (But be warned, they will probably tell you they don’t need any!)

I started this supplement regimen with my kids in December of 2011 because I was sick of them being sick! They were always fine in the summer, but the first week of school would arrive and with it so would the colds…and flus…and stomach bugs…and strep throat…and sinus infections….UGH! We were at the doctor every 6 weeks!

I saw a noticeable difference in my kids right away. They started getting sick much less often, and after about 6 months or so on the regimen, they were almost never getting sick. School started up this Fall of 2012, and I wondered how they would do. Would they get sick the first week like they always used to? Nope, they didn’t. It’s now November and they haven’t been sick yet, and we certainly haven’t been to the doctor! Yay!!!!!
